Printer Choices

There are several different printer options available.  Firstly there is the choice of Inkjet, or laserjet printers, either mono, or colour. Prices start from as little as £30 but beware you get what you pay for.  Cheaper printers aren’t always good value for money in the longer term.

When buying a printer you need to consider the cost of stationery, replacement ink, or toner cartridges, these can be just as expensive as the printer itself, this is where manufacturers try to make up for selling the actual printer so cheaply.

If you are buying laser printer then other components in addition to the toner cartridge will need replacing at some point.  There is a fuser drum which fixes the toner to the paper and this will need replacing and possibly rollers and corona,  These can be expensive, so price up replacements.

Whatever printer you are considering look at the cost of consumables before you make your final decision.

When you buy a printer they are usually supplied with ink/toner, but don’t be surprised if they do not last very long.  It is not uncommon for the original ink/toner cartridges to be only partly filled.

You should also have an idea of the volume of printing you need to do and whether colour is required. Most inkjet printers are colour ones but there are a few just mono.  Colour laser printers will be more expensive again to run. Lots of printers these days are multifunction printers meaning, they will not only print your documents, you can use them as photocopier and a scanner.  A number have fax facilities but we doubt the value of this now.
